Q and A

Question

Can I study in India if I am HIV positive?

I am a student in Sudan and I am HIV positive. After my high school education I want to go to India for education, but is that possible for an HIV positive person?

Answer

The best source for information may be to contact the Delhi Network of Positive People at the following email, as they may give you some further advice: dnpplus@yahoo.co.in

You could also ask the local Indian embassy, as the people there will know the latest information and legislation. If you are worried to disclose your status in front of them, you can contact them by email under different name.

It should be easy to buy ARVs in India but you would need a doctor to prescribe them and also access monitoring privately. We have limited information though and it might vary depending on where in India you move to.

Hi Adama, this will be dependant on the type of visa you are seeking. Any foreign resident found to be HIV positive will be deported.

Not all visa applications require disclosure of HIV status. You will be able to enter India without disclosing your status. However if further testing/disclosure is required, being HIV positive will mean that you will be deported.

More information about India and HIV regulations can be found here: https://www.hivtravel.org/Default.aspx?PageId=143&CountryId=87
