Question

Will rabies treatment affect my CD4?

My CD4 count was 1055 at my last report.

I recently had an injection for a dog bite. What effect could this have on my CD4 count?

Please tell me doctor

Answer

Hi,

Thanks for your email. First of all, please be aware that advocates at i-Base are not doctors and we have no formal medical training. Information from i-Base should be used to inform conversations with your doctor or clinic.

I am assuming the injection you are talking about is rabies post-exposure prophylaxis. If this is not the case, please let me know.

A rabies injection should not have any long term affect on your CD4 count. The recommendation for giving this treatment is the same for HIV positive and HIV negative people. If you are concerned about this, or if you have an unexplained CD4 count decrease this is something you should discuss with your clinic.
