Q and A

Question

I am on treatment, can i still get pregnant?

I have started HIV treatment. Can i still become pregnant – i heard it’s is impossible.

Answer

Hi,

THere is no reason associated with HIV treatment that means you wouldn’t be able to get pregnant. Many women who have HIV are able to get pregnant and have HIV negative children. Your clinic or doctor should also be able to help talk you through your options.

You can find more information about HIV and pregnancy in our online guide.

    Hi Nokuthembela,

When someone starts meds, it’s very unlikely that they’ll be on the same combination for life. Basically this is because new meds are being developed all the time. If you want to change to something else, having a chat with your doctor would be a good thing to do.

    Hi Yak,

This is a timely question. Prospects for cure research were discussed at a large conference on HIV and AIDS in July.

    Hi Happy,

This is exactly what being on treatment does. Your viral load is the amount of virus in your blood stream. This should fall relatively quickly. Your CD4 count is used to measure how your immune system is doing. Because you are on treatment this will slowly rise.

You can find information on being newly diagnosed here:

And lots of information on starting treatment here:

I recently discovered that i’m HIV positive and i’m taking aluvia and Truvada. I dont know my cd4 count yet, will this help to increase my cd4 and reduce my viral load?
