Q and A

Question

I have HIV and am pregnant. I’m having sex, is that ok?

Answer

Hi,

It is great that you are on treatment. This will protect your baby and is good for your health too. Having unprotected sex will not affect your baby. It is also unlikely to affect your husband. This is because you are on treatment. The longer you have been on treatment the less likely it is that transmission will take place. If you viral load is ‘undetectable’ the risk of transmission is close to zero. Undetectable means that it is less than 50. This is where you want to get to before you give birth as well.
