Q and A

Question

I’m undetectable, can I transmit HIV to my partner?

I’m positive and undetectable. My girlfriend is negative, can I transmit HIV to her?

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch.

When a person has an undetectable viral load, they cannot transmit HIV through sexual intercourse when not using a condom. There’s more about this here:

    Hi Prince,
Being on HIV treatment and being stable with an undetectable viral load means that HIV cannot be transmitted to your partner. There’s more info about undetectable = untransmittable (U=U) here. Your question about having a baby with a HIV negative partner is already answered here. Best of luck to you both.

I have a partner who is HIV+…she’s on treatment, we want to have our own child,is it possible that she might get pregnant without transmitting it.

    Hi Charles,
Sexual dysfunction is not generally reported as a side effect of the HIV drugs you are taking. You can read more about this in the i-Base guide to HIV and quality of life. This guide also lists medical conditions that could be linked to sexual dysfunction.

However, many people find it difficult to talk to their doctor about this aspect of their lives and it is something that doctors rarely ask patients about directly. Is it possible you to do this?

Since I started taking tenofovir, efavirenz and emtricitabine, I have this problem I don’t have feeling for sex. Sometimes when I want to have sex with my wife I reases in one or two Minus. Can I stop taking this drugs?

    Hi Alex,
Side effects with PEP can depend on the meds used for PEP in your country. Yellow eyes and skin (jaundice) can be a side effect of atazanavir. This side effect was reported with indinavir too, but this is rarely used now. Small increases in bilirubin – a waste product of bile – are not causing any damage to your body but they can cause yellowing of eyes and skin. It’s good to know your lab liver tests were OK. You can read more info at this link
