Q and A

Question

My partner is negative, can we have children?

I’m positive and my partner is negative. We really want to have a child, but I’m worried about transmitting HIV to him. What should we do?

Answer

Thanks for your question.

To ensure that there is no risk to your partner the important thing is that you take ARVs. Once your viral load is undetectable (that is if it isn’t already) there’s no risk to your partner. Please see here: https://i-base.info/u-equals-u/

What this means is that you can conceive the traditional way without any risk.

With regards to then having children, there’s no reason why HIV should be a barrier to having kids. Many positive women have children and children who are negative. Again, what’s important here is that your viral load is undetectable. There’s more about pregnancy here: https://i-base.info/guides/pregnancy
