Q and A

Question

Can a man get HIV from giving a woman oral sex?

I’m a male, 28 years old. Yesterday, I had unprotected oral sex with a female (who I don’t know her HIV status) at a massage services. I only had oral sex with her. She gave me a blowjob.

I’m so scared, so I looked for information on the internet, some websites advice me Low Risk, or if one has oral sex with an infected partner is less than 1 in 10,000. In my mind, Low Risk is not NO Risk, it make me stressful.

I am afraid that if she has HIV, I will be at risk of HIV infection. I’m so worried. Do I need to get HIV test?

Thank you very much and best wishes to you and your team mates!

Answer

Thank you for our question.

There have been no known cases of a man getting HIV by giving a woman oral sex or if a man receives oral sex. The only time it is risky is if you are giving a man oral sex. It is more risky if he ejaculates in your mouth.

You do not need to get a HIV test done. You are not at risk. For more information please see this link

I don’t get it. If a man ejaculated to a woman that is hiv posted, you’ll get HIV?
“The only time it is risky is if you are giving a man oral sex. It is more risky if he ejaculates in your mouth.”
So if you give a man oral sex its risky? How about a woman? So if I ejaculate to a girl that has hiv while doing oral sex, do I get infected? Is there risk?

The i-Base guide to HIV treatment (ART) includes the most important aspects and info about treatment. It is written and reviewed by HIV positive people and it uses everyday language to explain medical terms.

You can find it at this link:

TAC in South Africa can also help. TAC stand for the Treatment Action Campaign. This is the largest HIV positive support organisation in South Africa and they were responsible for the drive to get HIV drugs available in SA.

The main office is in Cape Town, but there are support groups and branches across the country, including in Jo’burg.

They also publish an excellent newsletter every three months, called “Equal Treatment”. This is available in English, Xhosa, Zulu and Tsonga.
