Q and A

Question

I want to use cinnamon to cure the following side effects…

Hi,

This a reply for your question on whether cinnamon reacts with any of the HIV drugs.

The bodily malfunctions are the following:

Heart diseases, arthritis, bladder infections, cholesterol, colds, upset stomach, indigestion, skin infections, weght gain…

Thanks.

Answer

Thank you for getting back to me in response to this previous question.

I am sorry but these problems will NOT be cured by cinnamon. Although some herbs are sometimes used for mild problems, there is little evidence that many of them actually work. For example, peppermint for indigestion, cumin for an upset stomach, honey and lemon for a cold, are unlikely to cause problems but they are unlikely to have large benefits.

If you are having all of these problems then you need to speak to your HIV doctor about them. Heart problems, high levels of ‘bad’ cholesterol, upset stomaches, skin problems and weight gain can all be associated with different HIV treatments. There are ways in which some of these things can be avoided or managed if you speak to your HIV doctor about the medication you are taking.

There is not enough space here for me to go through everything on the list below but if you read the i-Base guide to ‘Avoiding and Managing Side Effects‘ then you can find information on how to manage all of the things you mention.

Hi Pinky, have you had a second test to confirm your result? and do you know your CD4 count and viral load? The only way to treat HIV is with medicine. This medicine suppresses HIV and stops it damaging your immune system. There is no supplement or alternative therapy you can use that will treat HIV.

    Hi Nomathemba,

I’m sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis. But are you taking HIV treatment? If so please can you let us know what meds you’re taking?

If you have access to your CD4 count and viral load results, please send us those too.

If you live in South Africa you can contact the Treatment Action Campaign for local support. Here’s a link to their contact page.
