Q and A

Question

Should I use Omega supplements and at what dose?

I have read that omega is very good to take in combination with ARVs.

What is the recommended dose I should be looking to take? I am on atazanavir, ritonavir and Truvada.

Many thanks.

Answer

Omega-3 is often prescribed to reduce triglyceride levels in people whose triglyceride levels are high. Whether or not this is something that might help you will depend on your own current levels.

This study reported on using Omega-3 study in HIV-positive people to reduce triglycerides and includes dosing information.

Information on cholesterol and triglycerides is included at this link.

Omega-3 supplements can reduce triglyceride levels. This may be much more efficient than trying to obtain sufficient quantities of omega-3 from diet alone. For example, a 4 g daily dose Omacor, (90% omega-3 acid ethyl esters) is equivalent to 150g mackerel or 700g tuna or 210g herring or 1.1 kg cod or 280g salmon or 1.7kg eels or 850g shrimps.
