Q and A

Question

How can I get pregnant when I am HIV positive?

Can you please give me information on the right procedure in getting pregnant when you are HIV positive?

Answer

Thank you for your question.

There are different options as regards getting pregnant when you are HIV positive.

The options take into consideration whether your partner is also HIV positive or whether they are HIV negative.

As you have not indicated this in your email, I am sending you our general guide on HIV, pregnancy and women’s health. The guide includes detailed information on the various options available. Please follow this link to this guide to HIV and pregnancy for more information.

Best wishes

    Hi Tash,
Being HIV positive shouldn’t stop you from getting pregnant. If you have been trying for more than a year it’s a good idea to discuss this with your doctor and ask to see a fertility specialist if possible so you can check what else could be causing this.

Hi Mpho, are you on treatment?

If you are not on treatment the best way to try to conceive without putting your partner at risk is likely to be self-insemmination. There is more information about this in our pregnancy guide.

If you are on treatment and your viral load goes down below 50 you may be able to conceive naturally. This is further explained here.

Please look at those links, and then let me know if you have any questions.

    Hi Tina,

Can you give me a bit more information about your viral loads, and the treatment you and your husband are taking? Do you know whether your viral load is less than 50? And are you only taking AZT or are you taking 3 different HIV drugs?

Lots of couples where both partners are HIV+ conceive naturally (through unprotected sex) and have healthy HIV negative babies. HIV medicines are taken by lots of pregnant women and this does not increase the risk of birth defects.

Our pregnancy guide has information about conceiving when you are both HIV positive.

Do you need to have IVF because of fertility problems, or has this been recommended because of your HIV status?

    Hi,
I would like to know if you can get pregnant normal if both male and female are hiv positive.? Already on AZT, doctor recommended sperm wash but is expensive because I also have to have IVF. My partner is concern that the baby might have birth defects because of the meds, could that be possible? Also we both have low viral loads. Do you have any suggestions, please.
    Thank you
