The Children’s HIV Association of the UK and Ireland – CHIVA
13 November 2002. Related: Other news.
This Association has been founded as a sub-section of the British HIV Association (BHIVA) for all professionals involved in issues relevant to children infected or affected by HIV. CHIVA was conceived a year ago and was delivered at the Autumn BHIVA conference this October. The aims in brief are:
- to promote issues relevant to children infected or affected by HIV, including perinatal mother-to-infant transmission of HIV
- to act as a resource for relevant national organisations such as the Department of Health, Commissioning Authorities, Royal Colleges (such as RCPCH, RCOG, RCN), Public Health Laboratory Service and BHIVA itself
- to develop and regularly update standards of care for children and families with HIV, recognising and promoting the multidisciplinary support that is required
- to encourage service providers to use the standards for audit, clinical governance and to inform local commissioning authorities
- to highlight the needs of adolescents with HIV and promote good practice for transitional care to adult services
- to help service providers achieve continuing professional development in this field
- to promote involvement in multicentre research trials both by active involvement in trial design and regular open meetings to discuss results, implement evidence based changes in practice and identify future research priorities
- to represent relevant issues to the BHIVA Executive Committee and ensure that BHIVA Spring and Autumn conferences and business meetings address these issues
There are now approaching 200 members, and following a ballot of the membership for which the BHIVA Secretariat acted as scrutineers the following were elected to the Executive Committee:
- Gareth Tudor-Williams, Paediatrician, St. Mary’s Hospital, London – Chair
- Andrew Riordan, Paediatrician, Birmingham Heartlands Hospital.
- Elizabeth Kawonza, HIV Health Promotion, Terence Higgins Trust
- Sheila Donaghy, Paediatric HIV Nurse Specialist, St. George’s Hospital, London
- Hermione Lyall, Paediatrician, St. Mary’s Hospital, London
