Question
I had a HIV negative boy, is there any chance he could test positive?
1 October 2014. Related: All topics, HIV testing, HIV transmission, Pregnancy.
I was diagnosed with HIV in 2011 when i was pregnant. My CD4 was 498 and i was given ARV to prevent transmission.
I had a natural birth to birth to a healthy boy. We did tested him twice and he is negative, i was not breastfeeding.
Now i want to know is the any possibility that he can be positive if we do tests again? If yes how come?
Answer
Hi,
Thank you for letting us use you question on our website. Congratulations on your boy!
His two tests show that he is HIV negative. You cannot catch HIV from normal everyday interaction so there is no reason that he should be positive. You did the right thing by being on treatment when you were pregnant and not breastfeeding him.
You can find more information about how HIV is transmitted from mother to child in our online guide.
