I am taking Atripla straight after my meals, is that ok?

Answer

Hi,

Taking that combination immediately after meals could actually increase the levels of efavirenz. This is one of the three drugs in Atripla. This can increase the risk of having more, or worse side effects.

Usually because of this it is recommended that you take efavirenz at least 2 hours after you have eaten. Or with a low fat meal too avoid affecting efavirenz levels.

It is also usually recommended that you take it at night. This is because you will be sleeping when drug levels are highest and might be able to avoid some side effects.

You can find more information about efavirenz in our online guide.

    Hi
Does eating after taking Atripla have any other negative effects on the treatment or is it just those usual dizziness which only last about 30 minutes as in my case..most of the times I hardly have time to eat and only get the chance around the time of taking meds

Hi Godfrey. Do your ARVs include a drug called efavirenz? If yes, this sounds like a side effect. How long has this been going on? Usually it gets easier after a few weeks. Also, taking meds on an empty stomach before you go to bed might help. Please talk to your docotr if it is difficult.
