Question

Why have i been given Septrin?

I’ve just started HIV treatment in Kenya, it’s going well but i have been given Septrin as well. I didn’t think i had anything else wrong with me. What is this for?

Answer

Hi,

It is great that you are on HIV treatment. Septrin or cotrimoxazole is often given to people as prophylaxis. This means it is used to prevent other infections. It is commonly given to people who have HIV, particularly in African countries. Often people are given Septrin while their immune system improves and CD4 goes up.

You can find more information about staring treatment in our online guide.

Hi Joel, lots of researchers are trying to find a cure. This is very difficult. Although we don’t have a cure at the moment, we might have one long while you are still alive and able to benefit from it. Research into newer drugs have produced injectable options. Please ask your clinic if they have this option yet becasue some countires are already using these,

My question is, there’s no chance to cure aids or hiv until I died? Or there’s any injection which i get to reduce my hiv?
