Q and A

Question

How safe to continue having sex without condoms?

My girlfriend is on ARVs and I am negative. We have been doing unprotected sex without condoms for a year and a half. How safe is it to continue having sex this way because I really love her and am planning a future with her? Also, she is pregnant but I tested negative still.

Answer

Hi

One of the main reason your are likely to still be HIv negative, is that the ARVs make transmision very unlikely.

If your girlfiend has a low or undetectbale viral load, this will dramatically reduce any risk.

It is good to hear about your plans together – and congratulations on the pregnancy. The ARVs will also dramatically reduce any risk to the baby.

best wishes to you both.
