Q and A

Question

What is the risk to my negative partner?

If I tested HIV positive and my partner is HIV negative, will he get infected if we have unprotected sex?

Answer

Hi

HIV is sexually transmitted.

So yes, your partner is at risk if you do not use condoms.

It doens’t mean he will become positive, but it means there is a risk.

If you want to have sex without condoms and not have this risk, then start HIV treatment.

Once your viral load is undetectable, especially after a few month, this will dramatically reduce the risk to your partner – and the risk might even be zero.

Using condoms until then will prevent transmission.

Or your partner could take PrEP to prevent HIV. He could do this until you decide to start ART and get viral load to undetectable.

There is more information about PrEP in this guide:
