Q and A

Question

How long does an HIV negative infant take the Ilvitrim syrup?

For how long can an infant take the ilvitrim suspension syrup when tested negative?

Answer

Hi

Please ask your doctor about this. The doctor will tell you why it is important and how long it need to be used for.

Usually it will be for at least 18 months. However, it also needs to be continued if breastfeeding is longer than this.

Ilvitrim syrup is a combination of two antibiotics. It protects your baby from different infections.

Hi Sibongile, how is baby being fed? Are they breast or formula fed? and do you know your viral load? As baby is only 3 months there should be no need to also be giving baby water. Adding water can cause a small increase to the risk of transmission if breastfeeding. If baby is formula fed there is no increased risk. If you are breast feeding with a suppressed viral load, this risk is very small.

Hi Noma, congratulations on having a baby. In most countries it is not recommended to continue with NVP longer than the first 6 months, especially when mum is on treatment. You have not put baby at risk for HIV by not giving her this. Are you still waiting for the test result from 6 weeks? Are you able to follow up with the clinic that tested?

Hi Gontese, now that your baby has screened negative and is being breastfed there is no need for baby to be on Ilvitrim. This should be a discussion with your doctor before you decide to stop but being formula fed with negative testing would suggest that they can stop Ilvitrim.

Hi Senzekile, are you able to speak to the prescribing doctor about this? Or are instructions on the bottle? The bottle should inform you how much and when to give Ilvitrim.
