Q and A

Question

How long does an HIV negative infant take the Ilvitrim syrup?

For how long can an infant take the ilvitrim suspension syrup when tested negative?

Answer

Hi

Please ask your doctor about this. The doctor will tell you why it is important and how long it need to be used for.

Usually it will be for at least 18 months. However, it also needs to be continued if breastfeeding is longer than this.

Ilvitrim syrup is a combination of two antibiotics. It protects your baby from different infections.

    Hi Evodia,

Yes you can switch your baby to formula, this won’t be an issue. With regards to the ilvitrim, you should be able to stop giving this to your baby. However, you should clarify this first with your babies doctor.

    Hi Anna,

It’s good to hear your daughter tested HIV negative. It sounds like you’re on HIV treatment and that the HIV meds are working well.

But it’s important you let your doctor see your daughter’s rash. That’s because sometimes we can have a serious reaction to the meds we take. Please don’t be scared. But please take your daughter to see your doctor.

    Hi Thato,

Switching to formula is OK. The main thing is that your sister uses only one type of milk, so breast or formula. With formula there is no risk.
