Q and A

Question

Is it safe to take Aluvia, lamivudine and zidovudine when you’re pregnant?

Hi I’m am currently taking Aluvia 200mg/50mg and Lamivudine and Zidovudine 150/300. I suspect that I am pregnant. Should I be worried about my treatment possibly harming my baby? Is it safe to carry on with the pregnancy?

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch.

The ARVs that you are taking are safe to take whilst pregnant. Therefore, you do not need to worry about your combination.

Hi Lerato, it is great that you are on treatment.

If your viral load is undetectable you can conceive naturally without worrying about the risk to your partner if they are HIV negative.

It is good to talk to your doctor though in case they can help with information about the best times to conceive.

    Hi Nonhle,

I appreciate that it can be uncomfortable going to clinic, you don’t however have anything to be embarrassed about. By going to the clinic you’re taking control of your HIV, this is really important. If people want to gossip, let them gossip.

You’re pregnant so it’s important that you engage in treatment. It’s ARVs that reduce the risk of transmission to babies as the following explains: https://i-base.info/guides/pregnancy

As you’ve been off ARVs, you’re going to need to see a healthcare professional. Let them know that you’ve defaulted, but that you’re now ready to restart. Ideally they should check your CD4 count as well as your viral load. You may be able to take the same ARVs as before, you may however need to take something else. The important thing is that you start taking them again.

    Hi Ayanda,

It’s possible that the weight gain could be due to the Aluvia, it may however be due to other reasons. The best thing to do is to talk to your doctor about this. They may be able to offer you something else. However, nearly all ARV have the potential for weight gain.

    Hi Eva,

You’ll need to discuss your treatment options with your doctor, however I see no reason why you can’t change to a 1 pill a day regime.
