Q and A

Question

I missed 3 days of atrozia, will my baby be OK?

Hi , I’m 40 weeks pregnant and I have started atrozier3 months back . What happens to my unborn baby if I skip taking my pills for 3days?

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch.

Though not ideal, missing 3 doses of atrozia shouldn’t effect the health of your unborn child. This is because there is some research that says that you can take Atripla, (atrozia is a generic of Atripla) less frequently. Also its unlikely that you’ll have had a viral load rebound. Its important to note that this  research wasn’t conducted on pregnant women.

What’s important is that you try to adhere to your medication, this is because its the being on ARVs that will help reduce transmission. If you’re having problems with this, is there someone you can talk to?

The importance of treatment is discussed in our HIV and pregnancy guide:

    Hi Worried Mom,

Missing just one pill for a day is unlikely to affect your HIV treatment. Many of us miss a very occasional dose. And our treatment continues working well.

Many congratulations on the news that you’re going to be a Mom. Do you have access to your viral load and CD4 count results? Please let us know. And also tell us what HIV meds you’re taking.

Do you have support where you live? If you live in South Africa you can contact the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) at this contact link. They can offer local support.

Can my unborn baby be infected if I’d miss a pill for a day?

Hi B, Different pills might be kept differently. For example, some pills have cotton wool in the bottle to stop moisture. But these may take a couple of weeks outside of the bottle before any changes happen. Also, it can depend on how long the container has been broken. What ARVs are you taking? Can you contact the clinic and ask about your meds?

I found out that my arv container is broken. Could this make the pill not working?

    Hi Worried,

Though not ideal, your baby should be OK. What’s important however is that you try not to skip your meds. If you do your viral load could rebound and this isn’t what you want when you’re pregnant. This is because its important to have an undetectable viral load when you give birth. Hi Annah, although missing meds for so many days it not recommended, you are likely to still be okay. If this was just one time you would have to be very unlucky for this to cause a problem.
