Q and A

Question

I missed 3 days of atrozia, will my baby be OK?

Hi , I’m 40 weeks pregnant and I have started atrozier3 months back . What happens to my unborn baby if I skip taking my pills for 3days?

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch.

Though not ideal, missing 3 doses of atrozia shouldn’t effect the health of your unborn child. This is because there is some research that says that you can take Atripla, (atrozia is a generic of Atripla) less frequently. Also its unlikely that you’ll have had a viral load rebound. Its important to note that this  research wasn’t conducted on pregnant women.

What’s important is that you try to adhere to your medication, this is because its the being on ARVs that will help reduce transmission. If you’re having problems with this, is there someone you can talk to?

The importance of treatment is discussed in our HIV and pregnancy guide:

    Hi Okuhle,

Have you restarted taking your medication? As you’re pregnant, you’re going to need to tell your doctor that you missed taking your meds for a few weeks, ideally they should check your viral load.

    Hi Hlubikazi,

Do you know why your clinic didn’t you your medication on Thursday?
If you’re going to miss two doses, so Saturday and Sunday you’ll be fine, your viral load won’t rebound in that time. If you were going to be off medication for longer than a few days you’d need to switch to formula.

Hi Thandeka, please just restart your meds and continue as normal again. Your baby will still be okay, but please try not to miss other meds in the future.

    Hi Lerato,

You should be OK as it’s unlikely that your viral load will have rebounded. It is however important to adhere to your medication, this is more important as you’re pregnant.

    Hi Lesego,

I’m sorry to hear you had to miss 10 days treatment. What was the reason for this? Was there a stock out, or it might be because of side effects.

But it sounds like you’re back on your HIV meds now. That’s good because keeping your viral load at undetectable can help protect your baby from HIV when you’re breastfeeding.

It’s good that you’re giving him his HIV medicine. So you’re not in trouble. But please talk to your doctor or nurse about the short treatment break. If you missed the doses because of side effects you can ask to switch to other meds that will be easier to take.

Please let us know what HIV meds you’re taking. And if you have access to your viral load and CD4 results, please tell us those too.

Here’s the guide to HIV pregnancy and women’s health. There’s a lot of info in this, including for after your baby is born.
