Q and A

Question

My viral load is 20, is this OK?

Been on Atripla for 6 years now ,

went for my regular test ,got my results today and CD4 is on 900 but VL is less than 20 copies am very worried as it is usually undetectable.

what can i do to make sure it gets undetectable again?

Answer

Thanks for getting a touch.

The classification for an undetectable viral load is less than 50 copies. Therefore, you are still undetectable because your viral load is less than this. You’re doing well, and have nothing to worry about.

    Hi Sway,

These results look like your HIV meds are working well. Your viral load has been undetectable for years, as they are all below 50 copies/mL.

Viral load tests can have different cut off figures. Some viral load tests can detect as low as 20 copies. Other tests may detect down to 50 copies.

But you can ask the doctor why last year’s test was given to you in a different way. And it’s good news that you’ve always been undetectable.

    Hi,

Should i be worried? My viral load test result is undetectable range, However, Im confused if this is normally and possibly happened.

Last 4 years, viral load is, <35
Last 3 years, viral load is, <34
Last year, viral load is undetectable
This year, viral load is <40

    Hi Bongeka,

Viral loads go into the millions, so yes its possible to gave a viral load of 1500.

Is it possible for your HIV viral load to reach 1 500?

    Hi Rita,

If your viral load is less than 50, then yes this is good. It means that your HIV is under control. However it wouldn’t be written 18.8 19.

I got my results and it states that viral load is 18.8.19 less than 60 copies is this good or bad?

    Hi Lady Lyn,

A viral load 20 copies/mL means HIV is undetectable. If you’re HIV positive and on HIV treatment (ART), it shows the meds are working well.

What meds are you taking? However, even if HIV is undetectable, almost everyone will still test antibody positive.

    Hi Grace,

Yes, these are the new WHO guidelines for low income countries. However, what you’ve been given isn’t DTG. It’s a generic version of Atripla, so that’s the one that contains the efavirenz. If you want to use DTG, then this is something that you’ll need to discuss with your doctor. Though DTG is recommended, it might not be available where you live.
