Q and A

Question

My wife’s positive, I’m negative, how can I protect myself?

My wife was diagnosed with HIV during pregnancy screening. I’m negative, what can I do to make sure I don’t contract HIV?

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch.

Until your wife’s viral load becomes undetectable, you will need to use condoms when having sex. It’s the condoms, that if used correctly that will prevent you from contracting HIV.

I am HIV undetectable and taking ARVs. Can my partner who’s viral load is 300 and don’t take ARVs infect me.

    Hi Mmapula,

The risk of transmission when someone is on meds and is undetectable is close to zero. Please see here for more info:

I’m HIV positive, my viral load is undetectable. My boyfriend is HIV negative. Is it safe to have unprotected sex?
