Q and A

Question

What if I miss a dose or take a double dose by mistake?

Hi, if i forget to take my pill on time, or maybe take it twice a day, without remembering i took it, then maybe overdose by mistake. Can it cause any harm to my health?

Answer

Missing an occasional pill is okay

Taking a double dose of HIV medication is usually okay  – but it is not a good idea. The main risk is that you might get side effects for a few hours due to the short time when you have higher drug levels.

Additional doses of other types of medication might require speaking to a doctor or pharmacist about the short term side effects.

It is better to get a pill box. Then you can see each day whether or not you have taken your meds. These are cheap and work really well.

Josh.

Hi Suvo, taking this additional dose is unlikely to have any significant impacts on your health. Taking an extra pill by mistake and is common and rarely causes any problems.

You may notice more side effects than normal over the next day. This is while you have a higher level of drug in your body than normal. The side effects (if you experience them) should go away in the next day as the concentration returns to normal. There will be no long term problems.

If the side effects persist or you are still unsure please speak with your pharmacist and they can advise your further.

Hi Lynne, are you taking 2 tablets of levonorgestrel OR are you taking HIV medication alongside levonorgestrel?

What is the name of the HIV treatment you are taking?

Hi Ruth, as you will be short with the length of tablets you now have it would be advised to speak with your doctor/pharmacist.

The maximum dose of Lestavor is 80mg a day. If you were taking less than this there is not going to have been a problem. If you were taking 2 doses of 80mg a day you should speak with your doctor.

I mistakenly took 2 Lestavor tablets per day for and and realized after 2 weeks? Do I need to see a doctor?

Hi Debra, at i-base we are not doctors. Please contact your pharmacist for further information. If you are feeling unwell/are worried, please go to the emergency room and be seen by a doctor.

Hi Joe, to clarify as you have 2 pills left. Will you be getting Genovoya in 6 days and you have 2 days left of treatment, or you will be getting treatment in 4 days so you only need to miss 2 days?

Regardless, one instance of missing 4 days of treatment is unlikely to cause any problems. As you are robustly undetectable, in most cases it will take more than a week for your viral load to. rebound. It is when this occurs that there is a risk of resistance. As you will be able to restart treatment in less than a week this a very unlikely event.

Though it is still recommended to book a viral load test for a few weeks after restarting. This is just to check that Genovya is still working and that you are continuing to be suppressed.

Missing a dose for 4 days once in 20 years is not a significant risk to your treatment. You do not need to worry.

I have to miss four days of my Genvoya because of an insurance mishap, and now I only have two pills and four more days unit I get my RX, do I need to worry about resistant? I never ever missed a does, and I’ve been undetected for over 20 years
