Q and A

Question

What if I miss a dose or take a double dose by mistake?

Hi, if i forget to take my pill on time, or maybe take it twice a day, without remembering i took it, then maybe overdose by mistake. Can it cause any harm to my health?

Answer

Missing an occasional pill is okay

Taking a double dose of HIV medication is usually okay  – but it is not a good idea. The main risk is that you might get side effects for a few hours due to the short time when you have higher drug levels.

Additional doses of other types of medication might require speaking to a doctor or pharmacist about the short term side effects.

It is better to get a pill box. Then you can see each day whether or not you have taken your meds. These are cheap and work really well.

Hi Faisel, you do not need to do anything unless you notice any unusual symptoms e.g., nausea, vomiting and/or tummy upset.

As this is a blood pressure medication. Be careful standing up for the next 24 hours. Just do so slowly. This is because your BP may be lower than normal and standing up too quickly could risk falling over.

If you notice odd symptoms, or you feel unwell please speak withy our pharmacist.

Hi Angelito, how many tablets have you taken today? and what is your normal dose of this medication?

Usually people are prescribed x2 doses of trimetazidine/day. If this is the case and you have not taken your second dose of the day, skip it and return to normal.

If you have still taken the extra dose alongside your full days dose, the management is only for symptoms. This means if you notice any different side effects than normal or you are feeling unwell. If you do not notice a problem, there is nothing you will need to do and can continue with your treatment as normal.

Hi Davis, a one-off double dose is not going to cause any long-term problems.

Do you experience side effects with this treatment normally? While you have a higher level of drug in your body you may experience more side effects than normal, notably changes in your mood/nightmares.

These side effects, if you experience them, will only last as long as the drug level returns to normal in your body. This will only take a day. If you notice the side effects are very bad or they are ongoing please speak to your doctor/pharmacist.

Hi Jessi, is there a leaflet/instructions with your Keppra? Most will tell you what the safe daily amount of the drug is to give. Sometimes a double dose will still be less than the safe amount to give.

If baby is unsettled or you notice anything out of the ordinary e.g., tummy upset, skin reactions or changes in behaviour, please call your pharmacist. They will be able to inform you of what to do next.
