Q and A

Question

Will my baby be okay now I stopped giving him water?

My baby is 3 weeks 6 days, he is formula feeding and i just recently found out that i should not be giving him water when he is on nevirapine and i have stopped. What negative effects does this have on my son?

Answer

Hi

You are right that your baby doesn’t need water or any other foods – just the formula milk.

Now you have change to this it will be better.

Your son is likely to be fine now, but it is also good for your doctor and nurse to advise you on this.

Congratulations on your new son too.

    Hi Thandy,

Congratulations on your new baby. It’s great that she tested negative. But as Simon says above, your baby doesn’t need water – just milk.

How are you feeding her? Here in the UK it’s recommended to use formula milk only. But in other countries mothers sometimes breastfeed exclusively for 6 months and then wean baby onto soft food.

It’s not recommended to mix feed with both breastmilk and formula.

    Hi Worried mom,

If you’re asking if the medication that your aunt gave your child could have a reaction with the nevirapine, the answer is no. At least not with the panadol. There isn’t data about the entressdrupels.

Unless a baby really needs medication, its better not to give them anything.

    Hi

    I’m so worried
My daughter is 6 weeks and today she was crying none stop for over 2 hours, my aunt gave her entressdrupels and panado to calm her down.

My viral load is very long and been on medication ever since I was almost 3 months pregnant and been giving her nevirapine since birth

Will she be infected by any chance?
    :-(

    Hi Bongy,

It’s great that your son has tested HIV negative.

If you are only formula feeding there should be no extra risk to him. But feeding a mix formula and breastmilk is not recommended as this can increase the risk of HIV.

However, 2 months is early to start feeding him soft food. It’s usually recommended to start at around 6 months. But it’s important that you talk to the clinic about this.

    Hello Olwe,
It’s good that your baby is well fed. But if you think there is something wrong with his poo you can speak to the doctor about it. It’s a good idea to have him checked by the doctor to make sure there’s nothing wrong with his tummy.

My baby is now 3 weeks and 2 days on nevirepine oral suspension. I’ve seen him poo but now has stopped. I’m breastfeeding him, he beaps and releases gas but doesn’t seem constipated. What should I do to show that he is well fed

    Hi Thuliza,

Congratulations on the birth of your daughter.

Babies when they are young in general only need milk, therefore unless your doctor has said that your baby needs to also have water then there’s no reason why you should give it to her.

Unless your baby is ill then there’s no reason to give her other medication. If she is ill then you should discuss this with her doctor.

Hi my daughter is 2 weeks old and on formula. Is it fine if I give her other medication (such as Panado, lenon products for infants, baba suur etc.)while she’s on naviropine since she’s not getting any breast milk to protect her from any infection.

Also is it recommemded to give her water?
