Q and A

Question

Will my baby be okay now I stopped giving him water?

My baby is 3 weeks 6 days, he is formula feeding and i just recently found out that i should not be giving him water when he is on nevirapine and i have stopped. What negative effects does this have on my son?

Answer

Hi

You are right that your baby doesn’t need water or any other foods – just the formula milk.

Now you have change to this it will be better.

Your son is likely to be fine now, but it is also good for your doctor and nurse to advise you on this.

Congratulations on your new son too.

    Hi Saria,

If your baby is having issues with going to the toilet, please talk to a doctor about this.

    Hi Pretty,

This is something that you’ll need to discuss with your childs doctor. They will be able to advise.

    Hi Zoe,

There’s no need for you to stress out. However, if you were in the UK you’d be advised to formula feed, and not breastfeed. This may be different where you live.

Hi..my daughter is 6 days old ,on AZT…I gave her formula for the first 3 days but now I HV switched to exclusive breastfeeding under my Dr’s advice…I am still a bit concerned about how that will affect her status in 5 weeks though he reassured me that because m undetectable nd on meds ,there really is nothing to worry about…
    Should I stop stressing…

    Hi Thandiwe,

If you’re positive you shouldn’t mix feed, so breast milk and formula. With formula there isn’t any risk.

    Hi Aya,

Congratulations on having a new daughter.

All newborn babies are given a short course of HIV meds, such as nevirapine, if their mother is HIV positive.

And feeding only with formula is recommended here in the UK. However if you are breastfeeding, it’s not recommended to mix feed with both formula and breastmilk.

But it’s important that you talk to the doctor about her not pooing. You can discuss what is the best way to feed her.
