Q and A

Question

Will my baby be okay now I stopped giving him water?

My baby is 3 weeks 6 days, he is formula feeding and i just recently found out that i should not be giving him water when he is on nevirapine and i have stopped. What negative effects does this have on my son?

Answer

Hi

You are right that your baby doesn’t need water or any other foods – just the formula milk.

Now you have change to this it will be better.

Your son is likely to be fine now, but it is also good for your doctor and nurse to advise you on this.

Congratulations on your new son too.

Hi Lubanzi, congratulations on having a baby. Giving baby medication is not going to increase their risk of HIV. Often babies are given medication too early. Has baby been alright? Are you on treatment? and do you know your viral load?

Hi Gertrude, congratulations on having a baby. After 3 months, regardless if you are breastfeeding or formula feeding, there is no need to be giving baby nevirapine. After 3 months there is no longer a benefit to continue with the treatment. Though before stopping it would be advised to check with your doctor.

Hi Thandeka, I am sorry but I can’t give advice for the constipation because you need to talk to your doctor or nurse or clinic about this. In general, a baby only needs milk for the first six months. It in not usually adviced to give anything else, including water and juice.

Hi Gugulethu, thanks – and congratulations on your new baby. It is really good news that the first PCR was negative. Please dont worry about the one day of breastfeeding. Please enjoy this time with your baby, as it is really likely that your baby will not have HIV :)

Hi Nobuhle, are you on treatment? If you are and with a suppressed viral load it is common for nevirapine to only be given for 6 weeks. What is this other medication that you have found?
