Q and A

Question

Will my baby be okay now I stopped giving him water?

My baby is 3 weeks 6 days, he is formula feeding and i just recently found out that i should not be giving him water when he is on nevirapine and i have stopped. What negative effects does this have on my son?

Answer

Hi

You are right that your baby doesn’t need water or any other foods – just the formula milk.

Now you have change to this it will be better.

Your son is likely to be fine now, but it is also good for your doctor and nurse to advise you on this.

Congratulations on your new son too.

Hi Noma, congratulations on having a baby. No you do not need to be worried. As you are not mix feeding, there isn’t a risk of baby being given water increasing HIV risk. It is great to hear that she has already tested negative and you are also doing so well with your viral load.

    Hi.
My baby is 2 months now. Born via c section. She has been bottle fed from birth and been on treatment for 6 weeks as per Dr, completed. Hiv negative at birth. Due for more tests next week

I was diagnosed in 2008, and been on treatment since. Viral load undetected.

I’ve just found out that in my absence, my child has been given water. Must I be worried?

    Kind regards

Hi Noma, congratulations on having a baby. How much and how often does she spit her medication out? and does she spit milk out when not giving her nevirapine? As long as baby is getting most of the treatment, spitting out some of it is not going to affect her.

Good day. My 1 month baby is exclusively formula feeding & has been taking nevirapine. She sometimes spits it out, could that affect her?

Hi Nomvelo, congratulations on having a baby. No, baby will not be effected by this. As you have switched to formula and not mixing with breastfeeding, there is no increased risk of transmission. By nap do you mean nevirapine? and if so how long did your doctor prescribe this for your baby for?

Hi.my baby is 3 weeks old and our Nov is almost finished

I have switched from breastfeeding to formula at 1 week due to low milk production.

Will my baby be affected in anyway now that the nap is finished?

Hi Shile, congratulations on having a baby. What is your viral load and have you been on treatment? Baby usually stays on NVP for 4 weeks regardless of being breast or formula fed. Was it yourself or your doctor that stopped NVP treatment?

Hi my name is Sihle…the baby tested negative at birth, she took NVP for two weeks while being breastfed. Stopped giving her NVP immediately when I stopped breastfeeding. Is she not at risk?

Hi Ikaneng, congratulations on having a baby. It is great that you have been on treatment for so long and baby is on nevirapine. It is safe to switch, but switching will mean that it is not recommended to go back to breastfeeding after. Switching to formula will mean staying with formula until baby can start eating.

Moving between breast and formula continuously can increase the risk of HIV transmission – though this risk is low for you and baby given you’re both on treatment. Making one switch from breast to formula will not have this risk.
