Q and A

Question

Will my baby be okay now I stopped giving him water?

My baby is 3 weeks 6 days, he is formula feeding and i just recently found out that i should not be giving him water when he is on nevirapine and i have stopped. What negative effects does this have on my son?

Answer

Hi

You are right that your baby doesn’t need water or any other foods – just the formula milk.

Now you have change to this it will be better.

Your son is likely to be fine now, but it is also good for your doctor and nurse to advise you on this.

Congratulations on your new son too.

Hi Serina, congratulations on having a baby. Where are you? There are no guidelines that recommend baby should still be taking nevirapine after 12 weeks. Even if she is still breastfeeding, there is no benefit to continue with nevirapine after this age. For this reason forgetting to give her nevirapine at this age is not going to cause any problems.

Hi ,my baby girl is 4 months and she is negative of HIV but am positive and my viral load is undetected. She is using nevirapine which I sometimes forget to give her or when I take my pill she is asleep.
    Is she safe ?

Hi Keabetswe, congratulations on having a baby. No you should not stop giving baby nevirapine. Nevirapine is recommended for all babies regardless of how they are being fed. In most cases, for babies being fed by formula milk it is recommended to continue with nevirapine until at least 6 weeks old.

Hi Nobuhle, congratulations on having a baby. It is common for baby to stop nevirapine after 6 weeks even when breastfeeding. After 6 weeks there is no continued benefit to prevent transmission. Often the reason is that mum is on treatment with a suppressed viral load and this is significant enough to prevent transmission alone.

Hi Marshediso, congratulations on having a baby. Aside from the Drupples is baby only being breastfed? and having nevirapine?

Why is baby being given Drupples? Baby is a little young to need anything more. If you are only breastfeeding and giving baby nevirapine and Drupples there will not be a problem. It is safe to give baby medication while breastfeeding.

Hi Anam, congratulations on having a baby. Sorry to hear that you were having difficulties breastfeeding. When did you stop giving baby nevirapine? As you have switched to formula it means there is no further exposure of baby to HIV. Do you know when baby is going to have their final test?
