Q and A

Question

Will my baby be okay now I stopped giving him water?

My baby is 3 weeks 6 days, he is formula feeding and i just recently found out that i should not be giving him water when he is on nevirapine and i have stopped. What negative effects does this have on my son?

Answer

Hi

You are right that your baby doesn’t need water or any other foods – just the formula milk.

Now you have change to this it will be better.

Your son is likely to be fine now, but it is also good for your doctor and nurse to advise you on this.

Congratulations on your new son too.

Hi Peticia, it counds like your health centre is giving you good information. Your baby doesn’t need to kepp taking neviriapine once the clinics says it is okay to stop. The time varies though depending on your treatment and results and which country you live in. This all sounds good.

Hi Tebogo, congratulations on having a baby. Have you switched to only formula feed now?

When switching from breast to formula milk, it is common for baby to be constipated. This is because formula milk can be harder for baby to digest. This is normal and will only take a few days for baby to adjust.

If you have stopped breastfeeding, adding water in baby’s diet is not going to risk transmission. This is because baby is no longer coming into contact with a source of HIV. When baby is feeding well they shouldn’t need extra water in addition to their formula.

Hi Botle, congratulations on having a baby. This depends on your own viral load. When baby was born had your been on treatment for more than 4 weeks? and had your viral load been lower than 1000 for the four weeks prior?

If these both apply baby only needs to continue with nevirapine. Zidovudine is used in addition when risk of transmission to baby is higher when either of these two criteria are not met.

This is explained further here: https://i-base.info/qa/19891

Hi, please help… my baby was given nevirapine and zidovudine at the hospital but zidovudine syrup was finished in 2 weeks, should I continue with nevirapine only or go and ask for another bottle of zidovudine?
    Thank you

Hi Slindile, what position are you holding baby? and is baby feeding?

If you can give baby zidovudine similar to how they feed, this will help to prevent this e.g., sit baby up and support their head. This will also be helped by doing this when baby is more awake. What time of the day are you giving baby treatment?

My son is 2weeks I give him zanodine but the problem is his struggling to drink it what can do to make easy if he drinks his syrup
