Q and A

Question

Will my baby be okay now I stopped giving him water?

My baby is 3 weeks 6 days, he is formula feeding and i just recently found out that i should not be giving him water when he is on nevirapine and i have stopped. What negative effects does this have on my son?

Answer

Hi

You are right that your baby doesn’t need water or any other foods – just the formula milk.

Now you have change to this it will be better.

Your son is likely to be fine now, but it is also good for your doctor and nurse to advise you on this.

Congratulations on your new son too.

Hi Mirram, congratulations on your new baby. 3 table spoons of water is not going to cause a problem. However it is not recommended. If you are breastfeeding, guidelines suggest its best to only breastfeed. Nothing else apart from Nevirapine. If baby is feeding well there should not be a reason to given them anything else. Was there a reason you needed to give him water?

Hi Lebohang, if this is something you do not think is normal, seeing a doctor is best. A lymph node can swell in any infection (not only HIV). Is your baby experiencing any other symptoms? e.g., fever, crying, clammy?

Is it normal for a baby to appear something like small lymph nodes when they turn their heads if they don’t turn its invisible or the child is infected

Hi, congratulations on your new baby. WHO guidelines recommend that a baby be given daily Nevirapine and Zidovudine for the first six weeks, this can then be offered for a further 6 weeks if there is high risk to the baby. For these six weeks, Zidovudine is not required. Your baby is still on the same medication.

Hi Jessica, congratulations on your new baby. Please talk to your doctor or clinic about any worries about your baby. It is good he is getting these meds which will help him avoid HIV. Do you have support for your own health now? Are you also now taking HIV meds?

Hi Zizipho – young babies shouldn’t need anything other than milk for the first six months. Please see the detailed answer to this Q&A:
