Q and A

Question

Will my baby be okay now I stopped giving him water?

My baby is 3 weeks 6 days, he is formula feeding and i just recently found out that i should not be giving him water when he is on nevirapine and i have stopped. What negative effects does this have on my son?

Answer

Hi

You are right that your baby doesn’t need water or any other foods – just the formula milk.

Now you have change to this it will be better.

Your son is likely to be fine now, but it is also good for your doctor and nurse to advise you on this.

Congratulations on your new son too.

Hi, my son is spitting off nvp. Is it safe to give him a dose mixed with breast milk in a feeding bottle?

Hi Cuba, congratulations on having a boy. Is there a reason you are giving him formula? If he is only being fed with formula this is not a problem, however if you are also breastfeeding this will increase the risk of transmission – mixed feeding is not recommended.

Breast feeding is the top recommendation but if this is not suitable, formula is also appropriate. It is important to avoid mixed feeding.

Hi Ketani, congratulations on having a baby. One time having porridge is not going to risk baby’s health. Why is your mother giving baby porridge? 1 month is very young to be giving them food. If baby is breastfeeding well there is no need to give anything extra.

Hi Evile, congratulations on having a baby. Yes this is safe. Grpie water from one month and older is safe to give babies. This will have no interaction with HIV medication or negatively impact their health.

Hi Tebogo, have you been able to have your baby seen by a doctor? Colic drops are not thought to be harmful, though there is no evidence to show that they will helpful. There is no interaction between colic drops and Nevirapine that will stop the other working.
