Question

What will boost my CD4 count?

Hi i was given Atenaf 2weeks back with my partner, then we did blood tests..results showed that my CD4 is lower. they gave me winthrop,Nucotrim..do i need to take them both as they seem to do the same thing? And what is good way for me to boost my CD4 count?

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch.

CD4’s are boosted/increased by ARVs, therefore you’re already doing the best thing possible.

You’ve said that your CD4 is low, do you know what it is?

With regards to the other medications that you’ve been given, this is something that you should talk to your doctor about as they should be able to explain why you’ve been given them. They are however commonly given to people when their CD4 is less than 200.

    Hi Noooah,

Nucotrim is a double antibiotic that is active against many infections, especially in people who have a low CD4 count. Please see your doctor about the side effects as soon as you can. That’s especally if they are serious. You can ask if there are other antibiotics that will be easier for you to take.

Have you tested HIV positive recently? What HIV meds are you taking? And do you have access to your viral load result? Please let us know.

    Hi Nosipho,

Nucotrim is an antibiotic, it isn’t an ARV. Are you also taking ARVs? If you are how long have you been on them for? What is your current CD4 count?

    Hi Dee,

You’re new to meds and you’re taking a lot of medication, you could be feeling like this because your body is getting used to all the medication that you’re taking. However, this is something that you’ll need to discuss with your nurse. Your CD4 count is also low, however this will increase.

    Hi Sheunesu,

It’s great you’re taking ARVs and you’re very fit and not troubled by sickness.

What ARVs are you taking? And please let us know your viral load and CD4 count results.

    Hi Ncamisile,

It’s good that you’ve been taking ARVs for ten years, but I’m sorry to hear you’re not well.

What ARVs are you taking? Some ARVs can interact with other meds. But please can you talk to your doctor about your treatment? There could be other meds that would be easier for you to take.

Do you have access to your CD4 and viral load results?
