I’m positive and from Africa, can I work as a nurse in the UK?
Answer
Thanks for getting in touch.
Yes nurses who are positive are able to work in the health care system in the UK. There aren’t any restrictions to this. Therefore, if you’re thinking of moving here for work, don’t let your status stop you.
Hi Lisa,
When will be the best time to disclose my status to my employer? And to Whom should I only disclose it? The HR, or the Nursing Manager? Thank you
Hi FutuerRN,
Are you referring to the national medical council in the UK? If you are then you don’t need to tell them anything about your health unless you want to. In the UK you don’t need to disclose your status.
Hi.
Do I need to disclose my status when I register to the NMC? And when will be the best time to disclose my status to my employer? Thank you
Hi Nurse,
Congratulations on getting this job offer.
When you take up your residence please contact the nearest sexual health clinic. Please see this link to finding a clinic in the UK.
Please bring your HIV treatment summary with you. You can ask your HIV doctor for this.
It’s a good idea to have a few months supply of meds so you don’t run out before you get your UK clinic set up.
Hello
I’m a HIV positive nurse with a job offer in the UK.
Please how do I go about disclosure?
Hi Nurse,
HIV positive nurses are able to work in the UK. So this will not stop you from working in health care.
Good luck with your application.
If I’ll apply as a nurse, do I need to declare my status? Is HIV test required to work in a hospital setting? Thanks.
Hi Clara,
Many thanks. Good luck with your application.
Thanks Roy and Lisa for the help
Hi Clara,
As Lisa says, this wouldn’t be an issue. The UK does not require an HIV test for any people who visit, or for any applications for studying, working or living.
