My viral load is detectable, can I breastfeed?
21 February 2019. Related: All topics, CD4 and viral load, Children.
My viral load was 1100 on the 7th feb and I gave birth on the 14th Feb. I’m on Trubuss. My baby has been on formula, I want to breastfeed. Is it possible to do this?
Answer
Thanks for getting in touch,
Unless a woman’s viral load is undetectable, breastfeeding isn’t recommended. This is because there is a risk of transmission. However, the guidelines regarding breastfeeding vary depending on where someone lives. In the UK breastfeeding with a detectable viral load would not be supported.
If you’re able to access formula, then this is best option for your child as there is no risk to them.
