Question

Can someone be HIV negative but an HIV “carrier”?

Answer

No, people are either HIV positive or HIV negative. There is no such thing as a carrier – and the word is not relevant to HIV.

You cannot tell if anyone is HIV positive. The way to know if someone is HIV positive is if they tell you about their status and they have had conclusive evidence from an HIV test.

For more information on testing and transmission please follow this link to the i-Base factsheet.

Hi Jamal, regardless of when you test if you start treatment there is no risk of progressing to AIDS.

Hi Dome, transmission of HIV is not always simple. Having sex with someone HIV positive does not always mean they will pass on HIV. This is shown here: https://i-base.info/guides/testing/risks-for-transmission

It is great that she has started treatment. This will keep you, her and the baby safe. How is she coping after finding out she is HIV positive?

    Hi Josiah,

First, it’s great to hear that your wife is taking HIV meds and that your young daughter is HIV negative.

Please see the following links to all the info you need about HIV and HIV treatment (called ART).

The aim of ART is to get HIV viral load to undetecable levels in the blood tests. When you’re undetectable on ART you can not transmit HIV even if you don’t use condoms. ART is likely to have helped you stay HIV negative because this chance of transmission is zero. Please see Undetectable = Untransmittable at this link.

For much more info about HIV and ART, please see this Introduction to ART. And here is ART in Pictures that explains HIV treatment.
