Q and A

Question

I’m positive, which countries can I work in?

I’m looking for a teaching job abroad but I am hiv positive. Which countries can I get a work visa for without medical examinations?

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch.

Please see the following link:  http://www.hivtravel.org/  Here you’ll find the countries that don’t have an issue with positive people, as well as the ones that do. Your status won’t be an issue in the EU or the States.

    Hello Anon,

As a Study Abroad Counselor, I can tell you the US does not have any health restrictions when it comes to people living with HIV. The US government specifically said, there’s no need to tell immigration workers your status at the airport or any other authority as long as you don’t plan to work in the health sector.
Moreover, there is no medical test requirement to apply for and obtain the F-1 visa.

Hello Bridget and thank you for the message.

Unfortunately, we are based in the UK and don’t know the conditions for travel or relocation around the world.

Please see this site that may have more information: https://www.hivtravel.org

Hi there, thanks for sharing your experience and I am sorry you have been having a difficult time. I took out a few of your personal details and posted this as an anonymous comment just so this can’t be connected to you personally.

You are doing amazingly well to have overcome all these difficulties and to be determined to have a really good life – this is really important.

i-Base is in the UK and your HIV status would not be a problem if you can get a scholarship to a university here.

I am sorry that I don’t know about policies for universities in the US but contacting them to ask would be ok, or maybe contacting an HIV organisation in the US.

An organisation called Rainbow Railroad based in Canada can sometimes help LGBT+ people who are at risk in different countries, but they get many more requests than they are able to help.

Good luck with your plans and I hope everything works out well.

Hello! How are you? I hope you are doing well and everything is fine. I was studying at a Chinese University but when they tested me for HIV and found I was HIV positive, they cancelled my scholarship. According to them, Chinese universities do not admit students with chronic, severe, or potentially contagious health conditions under any circumstances.

But I refuse to have my future determined by my stable health condition. I do not pose a threat to anyone, and my health is under control and non-contagious due to medication. Despite feeling frustrated, I still want to continue my studies.

That was in 2019 and I am doing well on HIV meds but I am 24 and as a gay man in a muslim country it’s difficult for me to live here anymore. It’s forbidden to be gay here and also I have a lot of problems with them because right now after a lot of people knowing that I have this case all of them are just. Afraid of me and I feel really frustrated of them but. I want to go out and find another opportunity to live my life and also to finish my study and work maybe.

I wanted to ask you, does United States accept students who are HIV positive to study there? For example, if I were to get a scholarship, would I be able to study there? Or do you know of any programs that can deal with my case like give scholarship to me.

In my condition, living in a strict Muslim country as mine is really hard. And now that my case is exposed. A lot of problems just like came from everywhere this why I’m sending you this message on email just to find a solution if you can help me I will be really glad to hear that and to hear your suggestion. Where policies do not prevent my admission to a university so that I can continue my studies there? Please respond.
