Q and A

My partner is undetectable, can I still be infected?

My partner and I would like to try for a baby, however I’m worried about being infected with HIV. He’s been on medication for a while and his viral load is undetectable. I’ve read that even if someone is undetectable they can still transmit HIV through their semem. I really don’t know what to do.

Thanks for getting in touch.

Prior to the results of the PARTNER studies, several theoretical¬† studies showed that there was some discordance between blood and semen. However, due to the results of the PARTNER studies, (please see here: https://i-base.info/partner-study/ ) it became clear that there wasn’t any risk of transmission through sperm nor blood when someone has an undetectable viral load.
