Q and A

Question

My partner is undetectable, can I still be infected?

My partner and I would like to try for a baby, however I’m worried about being infected with HIV. He’s been on medication for a while and his viral load is undetectable. I’ve read that even if someone is undetectable they can still transmit HIV through their semem. I really don’t know what to do.

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch.

Prior to the results of the PARTNER studies, several theoretical  studies showed that there was some discordance between blood and semen. However, due to the results of the PARTNER studies, (please see here: https://i-base.info/partner-study/ ) it became clear that there wasn’t any risk of transmission through sperm nor blood when someone has an undetectable viral load.
