Q and A

Question

Do ARVs make you dizzy?

Can ART side effects make you dizzy?

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch.

Feeling dizzy is NOT a common side effect with most HIV meds (ART).

However, if your combination contains a drug called efavirenz, then feeling dizzy is much more common. It is usually helped by taking efavirenz at night. You may also feel dizzy if you take Biktarvy, however this shouldn’t last long and should be mild. In some people it could be prolonged.

What combination are you taking? If you’re new to ARVs, please this guide can help:

If this med still gives you problems, talk to your doctor about an alternative.

    Hi

I’ve just started taking my arvs so I feel dizzy after taking them at night. How long will it take to to stop the dizziness?

Hi Sakelo, are you taking ARVs because you are HIV positive or are you taking them as PEP/PrEP?

If you are taking them to treat HIV, unfortunately you need to take them for the rest of your life. Taking HIV medication daily keeps you healthy and helps keep your partners safe by preventing transmission.

I can imagine that this is a big change to your life. Have you been able to talk to anyone about this?

    Hi Sarah,

It’s good that you’re going to try something new, hopefully you’ll have less side effects.

    Hi Lisa,

Yes, Biktarvy made me feel dizzy, insomnia, foggy brain and anxious. I am about to switch to a different combination after 3 weeks as the side effect got worse instead of getting better. https://www.rxlist.com/biktarvy-side-effects-drug-center.htm
