Q and A

Question

Can I stay on the same ART combination forever?

I always adhere to my meds, is it possible to remain on the same combination forever?

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch,

It sounds like things are going well on your current combination, this is great news.

With regards to your question, forever is a long time. But, yes, so long as you are good at taking your meds, your will not develop drug resistance. This means, in theory, you could use the same combination for 20 years or longer.

But new ARVs are also being developed. Although what you’re taking now is working, there will be other options in the next few years.

How would you feel about one pill a week, or injections every two months, of maybe just an infusion every six months? With HIV treatment it is good to keep an open mind.
