Q and A

Question

Do you need to take Bactrim if your CD4 is 450?

I’ve been taking Bactrim for over 18 months. When I first started taking ARVs and Bactrim my CD4 was 231, it’s now 450. Do I still need to take it? My viral load is undetectable, so my HIV is under control.

Answer

Thanks for getting in touch.

Bactrim is recommended for people who have a CD4 of less than 350, that is if they live in, for example Sub Saharan Africa. Or 200 if you live in, for example the UK.

Bactrim is given as a precaution for possible opportunistic infections.

Your CD4 is good, therefore unless your doctor thinks you need to continue to take it, there’s no real reason why you should still be using it. Your CD4 is about 350 and your viral load is undetectable, HIV wise you’re doing great.
