Q and A

Question

Can HIV positive people join the police in South Africa?

Answer

Thank you for your question.

As i-Base is in the UK, I sent an email request to the SAPS from the link on their website.
https://www.saps.gov.za/talk/talk.php

The direct email is: marketing@saps.gov.za

I had a reply back saying that HIV positive people can join the police force.

So long as you are mentally and physically fit, it is fine to be HIV positive.

A lot of serving police officers are likely to be HIV positive.
If you are worried about this, perhaps email or call the employment section and ask. You do not need to give your name when you do this or you can say you are calling for a friend.

Hi Christina, being HIV positive is not a barrier to employment in the USA. Your status should not prevent you from working in the USA.

Hi Tate, unfortunately Saudi Arabia is not overly welcoming to those with HIV. To work, a HIV negative test is required – to be taken in the country. Testing positive will not permit you to be granted a work visa.

As a foreign national, you would be expelled from the country after testing HIV positive.

Hi Moliehi, as i-base is UK based I do not have any further information than what was posted in the original question. Where are you looking to work? In the UK having a tattoo (body site dependant) and being HIV positive will not be a barrier to employment.

if you have a tattoo and HIV positive can you apply or join the police force?
