Q and A

Question

What are the early signs and symptoms of HIV?

What are the common symptoms after exposure to HIV and how many days do I need to wait before I know if I have HIV?

Answer

Hi,

Thank you for the question and letting us post online.

Symptoms after HIV exposure can appear 2-4 weeks after infection. Most people will have flu-like symptoms. These can include: fever, chills, rash or a sore throat. Remember these are non-specific symptoms and might not mean you have HIV. The symptoms can last for a few days to several weeks but it is possible to not to have any symptoms at this point.

If you are concerned about your HIV status, getting tested will help to reduce your anxiety. This link will help to explain the types of tests available and when you can use each one from the point of possible exposure.

I hope this has helped and please ask if you have any further questions.
