Question
I need peace of mind about my test results…..
13 May 2010. Related: All topics, HIV testing, HIV transmission.
I’ve a very simple question to clear my doubts.
I tested HIV negative after 16 days of very, very high risk exposure using the following tests: a rapid test, ELISA and RNA, DNA PCR, HIV-DUO IIVth generation, HIV-p24 antigen.
Do I have to be relieved and not think a lot about it?
I am aware that I should get tested again in 4-6 weeks but do I have anything to worry about? Are these tests a good sign? Please advise because I need to have peace of mind.
Thanks in advance
Answer
Thank you for your question.
Each of the tests you mention work at different time frames after exposure. The only test to work less than 3 weeks after exposure is the PCR test but generally it is less accurate than the other tests you have done. If the exposure risk was as high as you say then you should think about doing a confirmatory test 4-6 weeks after the exposure.
