Question

Is TLD (Lavern) PrEP?

Hi. Are lavern pills used for PrEP?

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

Lavern is not used for PrEP. Lavern is a generic version of TLD, a combination of tenofovir, lamivudine, and dolutegravir.

PrEP is a 2 combination medication. TLD and PrEP do both contain tenofovir, but PrEP will usually also contain emtricitabine instead of the other medications. This combination is known as Truvada.

The different combinations work differently. Lavern is used to manage an HIV infection. PrEP is used to prevent it.

If you have another question, do send it in.

Hello Carlos and thank you for the question.

PrEP medication is usually a two drug medication regimen.

For PEP and treatment we usually give three drugs most of the time.

TLD is three drugs. You can be protected from HIV using it but it’s not what we would give as PrEP.

We have a PrEP combination of Tenolam as alternative to TDF and FTC. So how can TLD not work as PrEP if it contain Tenolam?

Hi Dylan, TLD when used like this is called PEP. PEP is taken for 28 days after an exposure. After this you can then switch the PrEP. PrEP can be taken daily and is done so before an exposure to prevent transmission.

For more information about PEP please see here: https://i-base.info/qa/factsheets/pep-faq

I was told TLD can prevent HIV infection soon after infection, and I read your comment that TLD and Prep are two different medications….so I have been taking TLD for 16 days now…..should I continue until I finish?then use Prep after, or it’s too late to use Prep now?
