Question

Breastfeeding is not sufficient.

Hi, I am HIV+ and my daughter tested negative on birth. I am breastfeeding her and she currently on Ilvitrim, but my concern is that it seems like my breast milk is no longer enough for her. She is 3 months now so I would like to get some advice on what I can feed her and keep her satisfied.

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

Congratulations on having a daughter. Is there a reason you think she is not satisfied?

Recommendation is to avoid mixed feeding. This means mixing breast and formula. This is because mixed feeding will increase her risk of HIV. Ilvitrim is not an anti-viral, it is an antibiotic and so will not change her risk. Exclusive breastfeeding when possible should be to 6 months and then additional complimentary food and drink can be added to their diet.

Though, as you have suggested your breast milk is not enough. Complimentary foods can be added into the diet earlier. It is safest to do this if you are on ARVs. Some breast is better than none at all. Are you able to visit a clinic to discuss what foods will be best to introduce into your daughters diet?

If you have another question please get in touch,

Josh.
