Q and A

Question

Can I use lamivduine as PEP?

I was given lamuviduine 10Ă—100 mg after a condom slip with someone who is HIV positive. After the first 10 doses, they gave me 150 mg.
Does it have anything to do with the medication?

Answer

Hi how are you?

Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) should be a combination of three different medications. Lamivudine is often one but it requires another 2 medications to be taken alongside it. The most highly recommend combination by WHO guidelines is lamivudine + dolutegravir + tenofovir.

It is not recommended to be on a single medication for PEP. PEP also does not change dose midway through a course. A course of PEP lasts for 28 days for it to be effective.

Josh.
