Q and A

Question

Will my baby test HIV negative?

My baby tested HIV negative at birth. Is it possible for her second test 10 weeks to be positive while I’m not breast feeding?

Answer

Hi, how are you doing?

Congratulations on having a baby. Have you been using formula since birth?

If your baby has been on formula and you have been using her ARVs it is very likely the next test will remain negative.

If you are not breastfeeding, there is not a risk of your passing on HIV to your daughter.

Josh.

Hi Nanny, PCR tests are not approved for diagnosing HIV. You really need to use an HIV antibody test, or a combined antigen/antibody test.

This is a good result because it didn’t find HIV. But to be sure you need to check with one of the tests above.
