Q and A

Question

How long will I live if I am 18 and just started ART?

I am 18 and have hiv and i have started ART. Also i exercise regularly and eat healthy. How long i will live?

Answer

Hi there

Thanks for your question – it sounds like you are doing everything really well.

If you continue to be careful with your meds and health, you can live as long as if you were HIV negative.

Some studies say you might live even longer though. This is because you will be seeing a doctor more than an HIV negative person. So you get your health check more carefully.

You can still plan to do everything you want to in life. This includes having partners and having children, if this is something you want.

Do you have support from other friends and family? It is usually more difficult being positive if you are just doing this on your own.

Please send other Qs if you need more info.

Good luck with everything.

Hi George, do you know your CD4 count and viral load? Is there a reason you have not started treatment? Would you consider it now?

Even starting now after 2 years without treatment, you can live as long as your HIV negative peers. If you continue to not be on treatment it is not possible to say what your life expectancy would be as each person will have a different response to HIV and how it effects your health.
